FAQ: How to configure Outlook 2013 and 2016 for POP3/IMAP email

Description:

The following steps outline how to configure Outlook 2013/16 to connect securely to your mailbox using POP or IMAP. Before proceeding please ensure you have the following information available:


  • Email Address
  • Password
  • POP/IMAP server name
  • SMTP server name
With the information above available, proceed through the following steps:

1. Open Outlook

2. Click on File then Add Account
3. Select Manual setup or additional server types then click Next
4. Select POP or IMAP then click Next

5. Enter the following:
  • Your Name
  • Email Address
  • Account Type - If you are collecting email from only one computer set the Account Type to POP, otherwise select IMAP if you wish to access from multiple devices.
  • Enter the incoming (POP / IMAP) server name. 
  • Enter the outgoing (SMTP) server name
  • Enter your email address in the User Name field in lowercase
  • Enter your Password, remembering that your password is case-sensitive. 
  • Tick the Remember Password option
  • Do not tick the Secure Password Authentication option
6. Click the More Settings option
7. Select the Outgoing Server tab then tick the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication option. Leave the default Use same settings as my incoming mail server option set.
8. Select the Advanced tab

  • If using POP set the port to 110 and set Use the following type of encrypted connection to TLS
  • If using IMAP set the port to 143 and set Use the following type of encrypted connection to TLS
  • Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port to 587 and set Use the following type of encrypted connection to TLS
9. Click OK to close the window
10. Click Next then Finish to complete setup
