Description:
Realtime Block Lists (RBLs) are a widely used solution for conveying the reputation of IP addresses in relation to the sending of email. There are many 10's if not 100's of RBLs operated by individuals and commercially that provide a valuable source of information to use as part of antispam measures. Although a single term of 'RBL' is used they represent different types of lists with criteria that vary considerably, meaning some could be used as the sole determination of whether to accept the email whilst others offer an inidication such that it should not be used to block an email but rather as part of a weighted evaluation. The quality and effectiveness of RBLs differ considerably so the usefulness must be evaluated before use.
We proactively monitor the reputation of our IP pool and deploy technical measures to prevent abuse of our systems - we have a strict antispam policy. However, it is possible from time to time that an IP address may appear on a list. In this scenario we will investigate and remediate as necessary to ensure reliable email delivery for clients and to prevent abuse of our service. Most lists work on a sensible, collaberative basis for the greater good of preventing the proliferation of spam. They will have clear listing policies and provide a means of communicating with them to resolve any issues.
However, there are a small number of RBLs that either do not publish clear listing policy, offer no means of communication with them to resolve issues or indeed charge fees for removal from their service. These lists should not be used and are typically not used by the large email providers such as Google or Microsoft so do not impact email delivery.
